WSOP Profile - Phil Hellmuth

Philip J. Hellmuth Jr. was born on July 16, 1964, in Madison Wisconsin, and began his poker career while attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He enjoyed buy-in games with friends and acquaintaces for $20 a pop, and found that he had the skill to win often. His desire to improve led him to leave college after completing three years and pursue the goal of becoming a professional poker player. As has been documented on several occasions, this did not sit well with his family; within a few years, opinions would change.

WSOP Star for more than 20 Years

Hellmuth's World Series of Poker history has touched upon the last 3 decades, winning 11 WSOP bracelets from 1989 - 2007. His first win penciled him into the poker history books, being the youngest player to ever win the $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em Main Event Championship, defeating the legendary Johnny Chan. To date, he has won over $5 million dollars in his WSOP play, and in 2007 Hellmuth was able to move into unchartered territory by taking an unprecedented 11th bracelet.

The Poker Brat

At the table, Hellmuth is a TV producer's dream. His nickname, "The Poker Brat," is not only appropriate, but it is spot on. If playing during a televised event, no doubt a camera crew will be nearby. Hellmuth is an individual who will say what is on his mind without any mental editing process. He's been known to be arrogant, cocky and at times, down right offensive. One of his gems captured by a camera: "If luck weren't involved I guess I'd win every one." Sometimes a nuisance to fellow competitors, he still has a fan base that loves wathcing what he does better than anyone else in the poker world; offer an uncensored opinion. And there is no argument to be made; his table image and etiquette have certainly offered him the celebrity he desires.

Celebrity Poker Showdown

In 2006, Phil joined the team on Bravo's Celebrity Poker Showdown where he offers some excellent commentary for some good, and not-so-good celebrity poker players. In addition to offering commentary regardless of whether or not he's playing, he has enjoyed writing three books that have been published; they are classified as poker education, but come complete with Phil Hellmuth anecdotes that he uses to illustrate certain aspects of the poker game. His autobiography, Poker Brat, is currently in the works, and he continues to work his poker celebrity into new endorsement deals; including the design of new poker sunglasses with Oakley, and of course, a clothing line.
