WSOP Profile Peter Eastgate

In 2008, Peter Eastgate was far from the favorite to win the main event of the World Series of Poker. Even when he made the November Nine, there were plenty of players favored ahead of him. Eastgate had qualified through an online poker site, and at 22, many felt he did not have the experience to go all the way, expecting that one of the more experienced pros at the table like Ivan Demidov or Ylon Schwartz would unseat him.

Eastgate the Champion

However, Eastgate prevailed. At 2:30 in the morning of November 10th, Eastgate limped with A5 off suit. The flop came K 3 2 of mixed suits, and Demidov, with 4 2 of hearts, checked. Eastgate bet 1.2 million and Demidov called. The turn was the fatal card for Demidov, a 4, giving him two pair but giving Eastgate a winning straight. Demidov check raised, Eastgate called, and when a harmless 7 came on the turn, Demidov moved all in and was quickly called by Eastgate to end the match.

Was Eastgate a Fluke?

Stil, even after Eastgate's victory, many wondered if we would see another Jerry Yang, a fluke player who would win the championship and then fade into obscurity. Danish poker fans needn't have worried. The following year, Eastgate was back to defend his title in force. Going deep in the main event two years in a row is considered an incredible feat. Modern fields consist of thousand of players, and even the best players would have trouble getting through a field of that size twice consecutively.

Eastgate's Feat

However, after Day 1 of the 2009 main event, while many of his fellow champions had fallen by the wayside, he was still standing. On Day 2, Eastgate was still bagging chips at the end of the day. On day 6, when Joe Hachem was knocked out in 103rd place, Eastgate, the 2008 champion, was the last champion standing in 2009. Amazingly, Dennis Phillips, the chipleader going into the 2008 final table, was also surviving, putting to rest some rumors that he, too, was a flash in the pan.
Finally, after nearly a week of play, Eastgate moved in with AJ and was called by Dennis Phillips and Billy Kopp. Eastgate flopped two pair, but agonizingly, a fourth heart on the river gave Kopp a flush with his pocket eights and Eastgate was eliminated in 78th place, having bested over 6000 players two years in a row.
