Which Full House Wins?

I am not sure who wins the hand when there is a tie. My opponent had A, J, 9, 8, 5. I had A, J, 10, 9, 8. Who would win? Secondly, both myself and my opponent had a full house, who wins?

Hi Laura

As the name implies, no one wins the hand when there is a tie, or with a more positive approach, both wins. When two (or more) players have identical hands the pot is split. However, in your example the hands are not identical so you take home the pot (8 is higher than 5.)

When both players have a full house you first look at the three of a kind. Say that J-J-J-2-2 is up against 8-8-8-A-A, the first hand wins. If the three of a kind is the same in both hands, which is possible in community card games such as Texas Hold'em, you compare the pair. Q-Q-Q-7-7 is for instance better than Q-Q-Q-5-5.
