When does a Texas Hold'em Hand End?

Hi

A situation cam up last night which comes down to us not knowing the rules but we haven't been able to find any clarity on this subject.

Top 3 Beginner Rooms

Three players were left in, the hole cards were dealt and one player folded. I was dealt 9 & 7 the player 2 was dealt 10 & 6.

The flop came and was 7, 8, 9.

Player two went all-in with a straight and I called him. We were pretty evenly matched with chips, I had a few left after calling. Being head to head we both showed our cards at this point and player 2 felt he had won, his interpretation being that the game was called at this point and, even though the turn and river hadn't been dealt, he had won.

The dealer then dealt the turn which was a 7. At this point I win with a full house. My understanding being that the turn and the river must be dealt to end the hand. We started to discuss the matter and even paused the game for a few minutes to try and resolve the issue. We searched a bit online and couldn't come up with anything.

In the end we scrapped the hand and all took back what we'd put in. It turned out that player 2 ended up winning the evening in the end and even offered to split the total winnings until we had some clarity on the matter. We'd made a call to scrap the hand and go on, I stuck to that and told him so, he took the winnings for the evening.

Could you please provide some clarity on this situation so we know if it ever comes up again.

Thanks, Daryl.

Answer:

Hello Daryl,

When a player is all-in and gets called (or if the player gets all-in by calling an opponent's bet), the hand isn't over until all five (flop, turn and river) community cards have been dealt. You should definitely have won the hand (and probably the tournament.)
