When a Flush Beats a Flush

Question:

In a recent game with friends we ran into a divided table on who should have won a hand. The problem was that three different players ended up with a flush. The flop was: ace of spades, king of spades, eight of clubs. The turn was: ten of spades, and the river was: 6 of spades.

One player was holding queen of spades and 2 of spades. Another was holding jack of spades and 2 of diamonds. The last player was holding 9 of spades and 6 clubs .The question is: Did the player with the queen win the pot for the high card or was it a split pot because everyone had an ace high flush.

Answer:

The player who held the queen of spades won the pot. Let's compare your best five-card hands:

  • Player #1: As Ks Qs Ts 6s
  • Player #2: As Ks Js Ts 6s
  • Player #3: As Ks Ts 9s 6s

To determinate the winning hand you always compare every players' best five cards as above. In doing so, it's pretty easy to see who the winner is.
