What if there is no hand?

Dear fellow poker enthusiast,

Okay, I've read that a tie breaker is determined by who has the best 5 card "hand." A "hand" being one of the 10 poker hands i.e a pair, straight etc etc. Now, what if in the end there is no hand?

Top 3 Beginner Rooms

Player 1 and 2 can't make anything using their hold cards, the board or any combination? I say it's a split pot unless your kicker is the highest card on the board. For example, me and this player had nothing. My hold cards were 4,3 unsuited and player 2's hold cards were 9,5 unsuited. The community cards were ace, queen, jack, 7 and 6 unsuited.

The highest card is the ace community card but because player 2's 9 was higher than my 4 player 2 won the pot. I say it was a split pot because the "highest card" was the community card.

If I'm right please tell me so I can relay the message to my poker buddies. No poker authorities on the internet gave this example. They all assumed that there was a hand on the board or with any combination.

Thank you so much!
Jessie

Answer:

Hi Jessie!
Thanks for an interesting question. You are correct that the winner in Texas holdem always is determined by the best 5 card poker hand.

The lowest hand in the poker hand ranking is the high card hand. Here the best hand is determined by the highest card, but if both players have the same high card you look at the second highest card, then the third highest card and so on.

In the example above your best possible five card poker hand is A-Q-J-7-6 (you are playing the board) and your opponents best possible hand is A-Q-J-9-7. So the card that makes your opponent the winner is the 9, which gives him/her a better five card combination.
