What happens when players bust in the same hand?

Question:

We recently played a home game in which an unusual situation came up that created a little controversy.

The blinds had progressed to a point where all the remaining players (roughly 6 players) were force to go all-in which created multiple side-pots. The chip leader ended up with the best hand and eliminated everyone.

The controversy arose when we went to pay out the second and third place prize money. I was always under the assumption that 2nd and 3rd place would be whoever had the next two highest chip counts prior to the hand. Others thought that the next 2 best hands would win 2nd and 3rd.

The discussion back and forth became quite animated and we ended up paying the next two highest chip counts prior to the hand. I'm hoping you could help explain what the rule is and settle this for us.

Answer:

Hi Dan,

You made the correct decision. The standard in poker tournaments when two or more players get knocked out in the same hand is that the person(s) with the highest chip count prior to the hand gets the better position.
