What happens when a player bets out of turn?

Question:

Heres the situation. Blinds are at 50 and 100 dollars. A player on the button states that he is betting 3 hundred in the dark. What do the players after the blinds do?

Do they have to call the 3 hundred or should the dealer tell the button player that he must wait his turn? This came up in a home game and no one knew what the rule is. Thanks for your great site and please advise!

Answer:

Hi Al,

The other players have the option to fold, call $100, or raise, just as usual. However, the bet from the player on the button stands, so everybody who wants to see the flop must prepared to put in $300 when the turn gets back to them.

If someone sitting before the player on the button makes a higher raise than $300, the player on the button can either fold, and lose the $300 he has committed to the pot, or make the call. He is not allowed to make another raise at this point.
