What happens when a card is on the floor?

In a home game, play came down to an all-in showdown with one player winning the pot, knocking the other player out and sweeping the chips to his stack. It was then noticed that there was a card face down on the floor next to the dealer who was not in the showdown.

This is a friendly game and the thought of cheating was not even in question. However, the fact that this card was not in the deck certainly "may" have impacted how the cards played out. As it turns out the card was not helpful in any way for either player....not that it matters much.

The hand was declared a misdeal by those that "know poker" and the chips were split up accordingly.

Citing a couple rules I have found;

1. One or more missing cards from the deck does NOT constitute a misdeal. The hand stands.
2. Dealer irregularities not picked up after two or more players have acted [after the small and big blinds] will not constitute a misdeal and the hand will be played out.

In my situation, the hand was over. Then, the card was noticed. Shouldn't this hand have stood?

Thanks,

Dan

Hi Dan

I agree with the rules you found. The hand stands. If not, you will find yourself in a heap of trouble. I mean, for how long has the card been sitting there on the floor? If you split the chips from this pot, then you probably should split the chips from the previous hand as well.
