Question:
What are the rules regarding side pots? I've seen 6 players go all in and 5 winners come back.

Also, what is it sometimes if 2 players have the same 2 pair the pot is split instead of going to the player with the highest kicker? Thanks! I love the game but just don't fully understand it.

Answer:
Hi Scott,
Regarding side pots:
The most important rule regarding side pots is that a player can't win more than he or she has put in from each other player in the pot.
An example: Player A moves all-in for $100. Player B also moves all-in, for $400. Player C, who has $800 in his stack, calls.
Player A can only win $100 each from the two other players, meaning that the main pot will be $300.
A side pot is then created for Player B and Player C. The remaining $300 from Player B's $400 bet will go into the side pot, and Player C will match that amount. Consequently, the side pot will be $600.
Regarding two pair:
The player with the highest kicker always wins when to players have the same two pair, but sometimes the highest kicker is on the board, and then it's a split pot.
Example 1:
Player A has K-Q, and Player B has K-J.
The board comes K-5-A-5-8
Both players now have two pair, kings and fives with an ace-kicker, and the pot is split.
Example 2:
Player A has K-Q, and Player B has K-J.
The board comes K-5-7-5-8
Both players now have two pair, kings and fives, but Player A has a queen-kicker and thus beats Player B, who only has a jack-kicker.
