Taking just one card of when cutting the deck
QUESTION
Observed on your site that you don't cut the deck. However, if someone does cut the deck, what is considered legal? I play with a gentleman who insists on cutting the deck by taking one card off the top of the deck and placing it on the bottom, stating it's a legal cut. I was wondering if it is in fact a legal cut?
Thank you, Aaron

ANSWER
No, as far as I know that wouldn't count as a "legal" cut. The main reason for cutting the deck after shuffling it is to make it more difficult to cheat. If a person always just takes off one card, then it's easy for the "shuffler" to take this into the equation, therefore the deck should each time be cut with a various number of cards. If you are asking for a minimum number of cards I have heard the number three sometimes, but this is highly unofficial. Of course, then there is the question if the deck should be cut in a friendly game or not, but if it is going to be cut you might as well do it properly
