Straight on the board, flush in hand

We play poker weekly and we have a recurring question. Today the following scenario happened and we would like a ruling on the correct way to determine the winner:

Top 3 Beginner Rooms

The community cards made a straight consisting of the following cards:

  • Ace of Spades

  • King of Spades

  • Queen of Spades

  • Jack of Hearts

  • 10 of Diamonds

Player one had 2 spades, making a flush
Player two has a pair of 8's

Some players at the table think that the best hand is on table and the pot is split between the two players. Some players at the table think that the flush held by player one beats the straight dealt in the community cards.

Which is correct?

Thank you so much for your assistance.

Hi June

The player with the flush wins the hand, since a flush is stronger than a straight. Here you have the hand ranking in poker.
