Side pot to the second-best hand

Question:

Dumb question I'm about to ask, but it will solve an argument. When playing a hand, one player goes all in on the flop, yet the other players keep on raising after his bet. If the first player should have the winning hand, what happens to the coins left? Does the money go back to the separate players or does the next winning hand take the remainder of the pot.

thanks

Hi Angelo

When a player moves all-in, and other players continue to bet in a hand, a side pot is created. The player who went all-in can't win the side pot since he only can win as much as he had prior to the hand (from each opponent.) If the all-in player holds the best hand, he obviously takes down the main pot. The side pot is then awarded to the player who has the second-best holding.

Let's look at an example: Player #1 goes all in with 67. Player #2 has JT, and Player #3 has AA and they keep betting after player #1 pushed all his chips into the pot. When the hand is over the board shows: 5 8 9 J J.

  • Player #1 wins the main pot with a straight: 56789
  • Player #2 wins the side pot with three of a kind: JJJT9
  • Player #3 doesn't win anything with his aces.
