WSOP Chip Leader Always Calls Smaller Stack

Question: Ok, I'm pretty much a brand new player, and have learned to play just by watching a couple episodes of the WSOP. It always seems like when the player with a greater amount of chips calls a player with a lesser amount all in, that player calls and puts in all their chips. Do they have to, or do I just never see them fold?

Answer: No they aren't required to call. The reason you see them call so much is that if the opponent just has a few chips left and they have a lot then they can play just about any two cards in hopes that they will knock the person out. The more risk involved with a hand, the more cautious they have to be.

For example, if I was the chip leader and you had just a few chips left, even if I knew you had a better hand preflop I would still call because it won't hurt me at all if you win but if you lose you'll be knocked out.
