Who Gets Second Place When Everyone Busts
I have a question for you. The other night I was hosting a No limit Texas Holdem tourney at my house $50.00 buy-in and you get 850 in chips. For the most part everything went well. At the end there were 3 people left all competing for money 1st- $400, 2nd $200 and 3rd $100.00.

Near the end Player 1 had about 5000 in chips, player 2 had 4500 in chips and Player 3 had 200 in chips. Player 3 has to post his blind of 150 so he decides to go all in, 200 chips. Player 1 calls his 200 and decides to go all in as well thus creating 400 in the main pot and 4600 in the side pot (correct?). Player 2 calls the all in as well, again putting in 200 in the main pot and 4300 in the side pot (correct?). Now the understanding that I have is that player 3 can only win the main pot (600) and player 2 and 1 are playing for the main pot and side pot.
After the flop, turn and river. Player 1 wins therefore he takes the main pot of 600 and he also beat player 2 in the side pot 8700 chips. Now it is not a question that player 1 wins the tourney, he has all the chips, the question is how 2nd and 3rd decided. My decision was that player 2 and 3 were all out of chips, however player 2 had more chips on the call then player 3 therefore player 2 win 2nd place and player 3 wins third. Was this the right call or would it have made a difference if player 3 beat player 2. What is the general rule? or did I miss something completely different? I hope this all makes sense
Thx Jason
Answer:
Yes, your ruling is correct. If the person with the most chips puts the other opponents all-in and he ends up winning, then second place is given to the player who started with more chips preflop.
