Answer: That's a good question. In Texas Holdem there are a total of two pocket cards and then the five community cards. When you do the showdown you take the best five cards out of the seven. What that means is that you don't actually have to use any of your personal cards.
There is a thing called "the board plays" where the community cards make the best hand so everyone in splits the pot; for example, As Kd Qh Jh Td Notice how the "nuts" (the best possible hand), is on the board already. It doesn't matter what anyone else has since the board plays.
So to answer your question about whether you have to use two cards or one card, the answer is that you don't have to use any of your cards; you can use one card, both cards or no cards.
