Two Pair - Kickers Matter

Question: I had two pair 9h9s and 7d7c my friend had 9h9c and 7d7h. The 5 cards on the board were 9h7dQs3d6c. So my friend and I had a tie which we then solved by going to our kicker. He had a Jd and I had a 10h. So we assumed he won the pot. But another friend said he did not win because the our kickers did not matter since neither of them were higher than the Qs. My friend said we split the pot. Is that right?

Answer: First of all, if you both have the same two pair then you compare the kickers. The kickers don't play if something on the board is larger. With that said, I'm not sure how you both have two pair with that flop and yet are comparing kickers. For you both to have 9977, you would both have to have 97 as your hole cards. If it was the case that you both had 97 for pocket cards then you would chop the pot.
