Tourney Player To Cash Games
I've been playing No-Limit Hold'em for about 1 year. 2 months ago I started playing on-line, $10-$20 sit and go tourni's. Although I have been profitable, it is a very difficult way to consistently win money. When you factor in the number of hours I've played it is not very profitable at all.
Top 3 Beginner Rooms
* Short handed play allows me to play more hands
* Game moves more quickly and can be very exciting
* Lesser hands can win vs. 10 person table
* Fewer maniac players in the cash game vs. $10-20 tourni
* Frequent heads up situations
* More respect shown for raises and check raises
* Fewer large pots due to the short handed game
I have done pretty well. Could be a string of lucky cards, or it could actually be more profitable….not sure yet. Now for my question(s)…..
1. Do you disagree with any of my observations, or have any important ones that I've failed to recognize that could impact my game choice?
2. Based upon the other information I've read on your site, you agree that cash games are the way to go, correct?
3. Would you recommend sticking with these short handed cash games or moving to a full table? Does the possibility of potentially larger pots out weigh the potential advantage of playing short handed for you? Does that change as the $$ amount goes up?
Thanks for your input.
Answer:
I think your observations are right on. I'm not sure if having a six person table versus a 10 makes the pots any smaller. It has been my experience that the six person table is looser and the pot size is actually larger on average then at the 10. You may have each person invested more in it though.
Poker should be fun and if you enjoy holdem tournaments more then great. I prefer cash games. To be a cash game player you can find a game anywhere, anytime. To be a successful tournament player you have to travel and battle it out with the best of the best. That just isn't appealing to me right now. Maybe when I get older it will be. Also, I think for the average player cash games will be more profitable. But by all means have fun with it. Play some tourneys now and again. I just don't want to spend half my time in an airplane or car chasing the holdem tournament circuit.
Short handed tables are usually much more aggressive and wild then full tables. I'm not sure I would agree that a full table would make you more money. You will have less fluctuation at a full table then at a short one but I don't think that you'll make more at a full table. If you are feeling confident at a 6 person table then stay there for a while and build up your bank roll. Being a good shorthanded player will make it easier to move up to higher limits since a middle limit and upper limit game is very similar to a shorthanded one.
