There is no sixth kicker

Question:

My question is about Texas Hold'em:

In the middle are the cards 9, 10, J, Q, 4

Player 1 hand is K, 2
Player 2 hand is K, J

so who wins and why?

possible answers:

1. split pot. both have a straight (9, 10 J, K, Q)

2. Player 2 wins because of the higher kicker (second J) which is not part of the straight (the first J is enough so the second can be taken for the kicker-card). But is it possible to take a sixth card as kicker???

3. Player 2 wins because he doesn't need the J in the middle because he can use his own J. So he needs less cards from the "global" cards...

Kind regards and thank you for your answer! Remo

Answer:

Hi Remo

The right answer is #1. Both players have a K high straight and will therefore split the pot. In poker, you try to make the best 5-card hand and both players' best 5-card hands are identical in this example. This is the same in every form of poker. However, sometimes you are trying to get the worst 5-card hand, like the low hand in Omaha Hi/Lo, but it is still only a 5-card hand. The sixth card never matters!
