Suit Matter In Holdem?

Question: ok, i know the following questions are utterly basic (i.e. stupid) but i couldnt really find a definate answer on the site or in the Q&A section.

so:

1. when comparing or ranking cards, does suit matter or just the number? that is to say, would AhKhQhJh10h beat AcKcQcJc10c? or say, a Kh high card over a Ks high card?

2. i've only ever played ante games where everyone just "puts in" before cards are dealt. so i was wondering, with blind games, does this mean the following player after the blinds can look at their first 2 cards, see if there any good and fold before they've even spent a cent (is that the general point of the blind structure?). so, hypothetically (i know you wouldnt) you could have a game where everybody folded and only the blinds money were in the pot?

thanks.

Answer: To answer your first question, suit doesn't matter in holdem -- only rank. So for the two example hands you gave, they are both the same hand. Technically it isn't possible to have more than one kind of flush (say diamonds and clubs) because there are only 7 cards, but if it was possible, they would still be equal.

As for the second question, yes you have the blinds idea down perfectly. If you aren't one of the blinds, you don't have to call or bet, you can just fold. And your hypothetical situation of only the blinds money being in the pot is one that actually happens really often. As you move up in limits the battle becomes a battle for the blind money. The blinds try to defend as best they can and the other players try to steal that money. Without blinds or any forced bets, people could just fold indefinitely and there would be no consequence (which wouldn't be very fun). So we have blinds to create action and get the ball rolling.
