Straight On The Board

Question: I know the best 5 cards is the winning hand, but does this also apply on straights? If the board flops a straight and no one has the high end in their hand, do all active players split the pot? This occurred recently and there was a debate as to whether the highest hole card takes it? I believe it's a split pot but then the argument came 'what if the flop was 2 pairs and an ace, would the ace be the fifth card if no one had anything, or would we go to the highest hole card?

thanks.

Answer: You got it right, in all hands, the best five cards win. This includes straights and it includes when the board has the best hand. Let's say the flop was A - A - A A- K. Everyone in the hand is going to split the pot because no one can beat quad Aces with a King kicker. Now on the other hand if the flop/board was A - A - A - A - 2, then the person with the highest hole card would win.

A person with a King would have the "nuts", the best possible hand. Another example if the board is like this A - K - Q - J - T (with no flush). Now once again everyone splits the pot. Even if you had JT and flopped it, you have to split now. This is what is called being "counterfeited". It is when your hand becomes worthless since the community cards duplicated it. Now everyone has what you have.

With the example of the flop having two aces and another pair, like this A - A - K - K, then you are correct that the person with the highest hole card wins. Let's say you have a horrible hand like Q2 and your buddy has JJ. If the flop is A - A - K - K - T, you win. You have A - A - K - K - Q and he only has A - A - K - K - J. Then after that hand you deserve to get your butt kicked by him.
