Splitting the Pot

Question: O.K. here is my question, In a recent no limit game blinds were in at 40/80 my friend was first to act and went all in about 200, the next guy (not a blind) called all in for what he had (61) chips the 40 and 80 blinds folded. All this was pre flop if it matters? the guy with 61 chips in the pot won the hand against my friend. If you can break down what amount of chips should he win total and from who???? Great site ya got here, just found it today and made it a favorite.. CHRIS Q

Answer: Hi Chris, The guy that went all-in can at most win the same amount as he put in from each player. Let's take a closer look. He is all-in with 61 chips. The total amount in the pot is 200+61+40+80=381 chips. The max amount he can win is 61 chips from each player; 61+61+40+61=223 chips. The rest of the pot (the side pot) will go to your friend 381-223=158 chips. If there were more players in the hand that had more than 61 chips they would be playing for the side pot.
