Sit And Go Tourney Strategy
I'll get to the question.
Right now I am struggling with 5 dollar sit and go tourneys on Pokerstars. I used to play the NL but I found that there are so many maniacs that I end up waiting for cards and get blinded to death. I switched to limit after having some success but recently have been on a slide. I find when I lose one, I often get right back in one, and lose again. Do you ever do anything to interrupt a skid that gets you back on track? I feel the only way for these to be profitable is if I can place consistently (more than 60 %) so I want to be able to lose one but still be able to stay focused for another.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks
Andrew

Answer: That's a tough question. I'm not convinced that the sit and go tourneys can be consistently won for profit. The reason I'm unsure is just because the tourney is so short that unless you get a couple hands, you'll be out.
I talked a little about this on another question sent in. Even if the tourney lasts 10 levels (which it won't), you'll only get 100 hands. It's very easy to go that many hands and not get a winner, let alone enough to win the whole thing. I think you would have a better chance of winning a no limit sit and go tournament then a limit one since you have more weapons in your arsenal.
The bluff is a much more affective tool in no limit then in limit. You can win some pots without a hand in no limit but that's really hard in limit. In both structures, you'll want to play very aggressively. You don't have enough time to wait for a strong hand. Pick a spot and then be very aggressive and try to buy the pot if you can't flop anything. No one knows that you don't much.
The worst thing you can do is just wait until the blinds have bled you out and if you do win a pot it won't mean squat. If I were you I would also brush up on starting hands and what plays well with little competition. Lastly, do a little experimenting. Since its only a 5 dollar buy-in, take a day and just mess around. Try playing a few different ways and see if you can come up with a strategy that will work.
