Side Pots And Live Hands

Question:Hi there, just wondering if you can clarify something for us? Tonight we had 5 players playing no-limit texas holdem and player 2 went all in (with only 1 remaining chip) so everyone called. Player 3 and player 5 wanted to have a side bet. Player 1 and player 4 didn't want to side bet. My question is do player 1 and player 4 have to side bet to stay in the hand or are they still eligible for the original pot. I understand they are obviously not eligible for the side pot but can they still stay in for the original pot?

Thanks,

Answer: There are dead hands (those that can't win pots) and live hands (those that are still eligible to have a showdown). Player 1 and 4, to keep their hands live, have to keep calling. Either you run out of chips and are all-in or you must keep putting out money matching the wagers to keep your hand in contention for the pot. So if Player 1 and 4 don't want to make any side bets, they have to fold. If they fold, they have no chance of winning anything, the side pot or main pot.

Question: At a recent game at my house we had seven players. Everyone was in to see the flop. Everyone checked up to the player before the dealer and he went all in. The dealer and two other players called the all in. Then came the turn card. The player next to the dealer made a bet. The player next to him did not call the bet and said check.(Can he do this?) Then the player who called all in could not cover the bet because he went all in. The dealer said check and did not cover the bet. My question is. Can the two players who did not cover the bet stay in or do they have to cover the bet or dish? Thanks for your help.

Answer: No, he can't check. If he wants to keep his hand live he must, at minimum, match all the bets wagered -- only exception is if you run out of chips and go all-in.
