Showing Cards Before Acting -- Talking In Hand

Question: I have a question on a heads up play. An other player went all in on with only the river card left to show. I had the A-10 straight and a draw to the Q high flush. There was a flush possible on the board, but I thought he was bluffing. I flopped my cards over and said I was still thinking about calling his bet (he had more chips). During that time, the other players gave opinions (not solicited). I finally called all in and won (he had 2 pair). He through his cards and all his chips in and left in a hurry. We have had people throw cards up before (earlier games) without comment. Was I wrong or did I fold by doing that. the others at the table thought I did nothing wrong, but I would like an expert opinion.

Answer: There are two answers. One answer is definitely no and the other answer is it depends. First of all, people not in the hand should not discuss it until afterwards. That's a clear cut answer. As for the question of being able to show your cards before you decide what move to make, it depends where you play. Since this is a home game you can do whatever you like but that isn't tolerated anymore at a lot of tournaments and casinos.

The rule is that you should protect and not expose your card(s) until after the hand. Then if you do show them it is "show one show all." That means if you show the person next to you what you had you are supposed to show everyone else at the table so it is fair -- no one has information other people don't.
