Sharing Info Away From Table Ethical?

Question: I have learned many things from this site and I thank for that. I have a question about poker when you are not playing poker. I have played in 3 different poker situations, casino, online and with friends (home games). I prefer home games, and that is what I mainly do as a rule.

I have a group of about 12 guys that get together and play. But there are times when there are only a few of the guys sitting around having a beer, and not playing poker. Since our group consists of only 12 people you, pick up their habits and tells and remember them quite easily. Here is the question.

Is it fair or ethical to discuss one's tells, habits, tendencies with other players who are not present, outside of a poker game?

Thank you

Answer:

That's a good question. Is it against the rules? No. Is it ethical? I'm not sure. I do it all the time with my friends who play at similar games. I'll take a break and we'll go for a walk and he'll tell him some stuff about players that I might not have played with before. I don't see that as being unfair. I think if you were to use this as a team effort to beat someone, then it would be unethical. But that isn't what you are doing. You are playing individually, but discussing play away from the table, including player types and tells. That's fine.

Another way to look at it would be if you would lie or not if asked that you did this by one of the guys whom you discuss. I don't think you would. You'd just say, "yeah, we talk about everyone's game." You have nothing to hide. So, no, I don't think its unethical as long as you are each playing with your own money and not as a team. Who knows, they are probably talking about you too when you aren't around.
