Second and Third Place Go All-in At Same Time

Question: Just got done playing a home game, where payouts go to 1st 2nd and 3rd. My question is

Top 3 Beginner Rooms

Player 1 goes all in for $500.00

Player 2 goes all in for $700.00

And player 3 calls, and still has chips left.

Player 3 wins so he wins both pots.

Player 1 had a better hand than player 2,

Who wins 2nd place? Player 1 who had a better hand, or player 2 who had more chips to start with.?

Answer: You compare who had more chips to start with. Player 2 would take second place since he had $700 and Player 1 would get 3rd place. The reason is that you can't compare the two players hands to see who had a better one because what would you do with the outcome if Player 1 had a better hand? If it were only them in the pot Player 2 would still have $200 left even if he lost so it wouldn't be fair to knock him completely out in a backwards evaluation. If Player 1 and Player 2 both had the same amount of chips and lost at the same time then they tie for 2nd and split the money down the middle.
