Answer: The tournament director makes the rules for the tourney and their rules will supercede anything I tell you here. But in most games if the person didn't request to see the hand in advance, the person who lost isn't required to show it. The vast majority of the time if you call on the river and lose you won't be asked to show your hand. You shouldn't volunteer to show it either because it gives some info that can be used against you later.
In your case since nothing contrary to typical cardroom rules was specified before you played, the guy bitching had no ground to be upset. That's bad form to win a pot and harass the person who lost. I only reserve that for people like that guy who deserve it. If he wanted to see her hand, he should have mentioned to the dealer to please "show all hands" before showdown.
Also, as soon as her hand touched the muck pile, the dealer is never allowed to take it out. I've seen dealers do that but they aren't supposed to. No card should ever be taken out of the muck pile for any reason.
