Raising Rule For No Limit Holdem

Question: There was an incident in a game where the blinds were 1600/3200. The 3200 blind was called by three people. The last person went all in with 4800. The next player wanted to call and put in 1600; he was already in for the original 3200 bet. The argument was that he had to put in 3200 because he had to cover the big blind and then pull out 1600 for a side pot and if the next player wanted to go with him he did the same and they had a side pot. The player who wanted to call the all in bet said that no, he only had to call the 1600 and then if he wanted to raise that, then he would have to raise 3200. Who was correct in this situation?

Answer: If I understand you correctly, one player went all-in for 4800 and then another player just wanted to call and you are unsure of how much that should be... If the bet was 4800 and he already had 3200 in, then 1600 is all he would have to add. As long as everyone just called the 4800, there wouldn't be a side pot yet. Any additional money wagered above 4800 would go in the side pot. Lastly, you are correct that if the non all-in player wanted to raise, he would have to do it in minimum increments of 3200.

Question 3/9/05: I think the question is not very clear, but I read it the same way you did and believe your dead on.

However, the last sentence I have a question about. Why isn't the minimum raise increment 1600 for the non all-in player? After all we're pre-flop and the small blind is 1600...

Answer: The all-in player didn't have enough money for a full raise. A full raise is double the big blind. Since the all-in player's raise wasn't a full one, the next player has three options; one, just call the extra amount; two, complete the bet to 6400; three, reraise and make it 3x the big blind or whatever amount above that. In no limit holdem, the original preflop bet is the big blind. To raise you have to at least double the initial bet (unless you don't have enough in which case you go all-in like the guy did in the example above).
