Raising from big blind if everyone calls...

Question: thanks for putting up such a great - and greatly needed - site. my question is about the big blind and raising. in a no limit holdem tourney, can the big blind raise if everyone else only calls the big blind? for example, can the big blind go "all in" when the bet comes back to him with no one else raising the big blind?

Answer: Thanks for the question and I'm glad you are enjoying the site. To answer your question, yes you can raise from the big blind if everyone just calls. This is true for no limit, limit, tourneys and regular games. The big blind is considered a forced bet but the person has what is called "options" when it comes back to them. If no one has raised they can just check and continue, or they can raise. If someone has raised then they can either reraise, call or fold.

This is treated the same way if you miss your big blind and then come in later. Let's say you are playing at a casino and miss your blind. They give you a missed blind button and then when you come back you can either wait until the blind comes around again or "post". Posting means putting in your missed big blind.
