Question On Chip Stacking

Question: I would like to know your feelings on chip stacking. I watched a live play game the other day where all chips were colored out to only 2 different color chips and one player had his larger chips hidden behind the cheaper chips and had a cheaper chip on top of his larger chips making it look like he had only stacks of the cheaper chips. The opponent went all-in against him and lost, but finding out afterwards that they had the same amount of chips. The loser was upset that he hid his chips and said you weren't allowed to do that. Is this in the rule book?

Answer: I'm not aware of any rule that states a player has to arrange his chips to reveal their total amount, but that doesn't mean there isn't a club or casino out there that does have that rule. I'm almost sure that no live cash games have a rule like that because often times people will "color up" and place the higher denomination chip beneath or behind their other chips.

Usually in a no limit holdem situation like one you gave the player who was unsure about the amount of chips it would cost him would ask for a chip count. At that point it wouldn't matter how the opponent stacked their chips since all are counted. Lastly, for the sake of completeness, let me mention a rule called "rat holing." Basically what that means is you aren't allowed to take money off the table and keep playing. For example, if you were playing in a no limit holdem cash game and just won a few huge pots, you couldn't take some chips and cash in and still keep playing.

Either you have to take all your chips off the table, cash in and then come back or you have to keep them there. This also applies to giving chips to your friend at the table or giving chips to a person at another table. The reason is obvious when you take no limit holdem. Imagine if your opponent one $1000 from you and then just pocketed it and kept $100 on the table to limit his risk. That wouldn't be fair.
