Quads On Flop

Question: This hand came up last night and we couldn't determine the winner. Two players, heads-up.

Player A: - Held K,K

Player B: - Held A, K

The table after the river: 3, 3, 3, 3, 6

We reasoned that the pair of K's held by Player A were insignificant because you can only play 5 cards to make a hand. We determined that Player B wins with the Ace.

Was this the correct assement?

Thank you,

Answer: Thanks for the question. Yes, you are right that the person with the A wins since the last 3 made his KK useless against the Ace. This happens more often then you think. When the board puts up cards that render your hand useless, the term is called "counterfeiting." Normally when you get counterfeited you flop something like a straight and then the board puts up your cards on the turn and river but this example also illustrates this concept.

One tip related to this is in no limit calling when at best you are going to just chop. For example, let's say you just flopped a straight but then the turn card made it so that the other player only had to have a King to win, otherwise you would both split the pot. If he bet a lot, you probably shouldn't call. Calling for only chopping is a no no most of the time in no limt holdem.
