Pocket Pairs Worth More In Holdem?

Question: I play texas hold'em with my friends weekly. They are under the impression that if for example: you have pocket 9's and other person has A J unsuited and the flop was 5 7 10 the turn A and the river 3. They think the pocket pairs beat the split pair. Is this true it has been an ongoing argument with us. I believe the AA J high wins. Please let me know who is right.

Answer: Right, the 99's lose to the pair of Aces. There are not extra points give to a person because they have the pair in their hand versus on the board. Remember, holdem is a game that uses seven cards to make the best five card hand. There are two personal cards and five community cards. There is no preference given to the cards in your personal holding versus the community holding. Let me give you an example to illustrate the community card concept:

You have 99

Your buddy has A4

The flop is T-T-J

-- you have him beat so far with TT99J

The turn card is a 4

-- you still have him beat with TT99J versus his TT44A

The river card is a J

-- he beats you now because he has JJTTA and you only have JJTT9

* there are no three pair hands in holdem, the best 5 cards play. Your pocket nines got counterfeited.
