Pocket Ducks Winning A Huge Pot

Question: You may wish to share this with your readership. If you don't, well, that's ok too!

I play pot limit holdem, online. The blinds are $0.5/$1 and the bets are $1/$2.

I was looking at a 10 seat table that had two seats spare, so I joined. Another person sat in the remaining seat so the table was full. We both posted our penalty blinds along with the naturals.

I was dealt a pair of two's and was UTG. I checked, I had already paid, so it was a free shout. If anyone raised I was going to fold. The next player bet $1 everyone else called/checked (including both blinds) and it was back to me. I raised the bet to the size of the pot $10. Two players folded, everyone else called. The flop came 2 5 T rainbow. Both blinds had folded, so it was down to me. I looked at the pot and raised the bet accordingly $90! 4 players folded and would you believe it, I had 3 callers!! The pot was now $450! The turn came Ad! This completed the rainbow and no flushes were possible from then on. Straights were an outside possibility, but I felt had nothing to fear. I raised the bet to the size of the pot again,

$450. 2 players folded and 1 called. The river came 7h. I raised the bet again! The last player called and his pair of aces were beaten by my set of little ducklings and it felt goooooood!

That hand made me a lot of money, but what I couldn't understand was the mentality of the players calling. Every time the bet came to me I doubled the size of the pot. In doing so, I was telling them that I had a hand and I was going to run with it. Players that I had played against before (there were only two, I think, folded after my first round raise). I don't know whether the fact that I had just joined the table was an influencing factor in their decision making (I have seen players join a table and do a similar thing with good short term results) but they would not or could not accept that I had a hand to play or perhaps they thought I was bluffing! Crazy people!

PS I folded the next 10 starting hands!

Answer: Awesome, nothing feels better then to flop something huge and get action (major action)! Hands like that are few and fair between but well worth the wait!

The readers should note how the initial raise preflop probably sparked all the action post flop since there is no way they assumed he had a set of ducks. Deception pays big dividends.
