Play Sets in Action Games and Suited Connectors in Passive

Question:

Hi there,

I have a question about something I read in Sklansky's book (hold'em for advanced players). He says small pairs like games where there is a lot of action on the flop, while the small and middle suited connectors prefere more passive play. Why is that?

Answer:

Hi Snarf

When you play a small pair you wish to flop a set. If you don't get three of a kind on the flop your pair is usually unplayable. But when you hit the set you often hold the best hand. Your set is also well disguised, for example; no one can possibly know that you have 33 on a 3 7 A flop. If you play in a game where there is a lot of action on the flop you might be able to get all your chips into the pot with your set. And most of the times you are a big favourite to take down the pot.

However, when you play suited connectors you will rarely flop a real hand. What you hope for is a good draw, flush or straight. In a game with a lot of action your draw often gets priced out and you have to get rid of it, and calling an all in or a huge bet with just a draw is not an ideal situation. That is why it is better to play them in a passive game where you can bet your draw, and possibly pick up the pot right there, and if someone calls you, you have outs.
