Over Thinking The Pot

Question: Thanks for the site. Very informative.

I'm a very inexperienced player. I've been playing all kinds of poker games since I was a kid, mostly nickel and dime fun games and whatnot. Recently I've been playing more on-line and a weekly game with 6-9 players. I'm trying to learn more about Texas Holdem but it seems the more I learn, the more I over-analyze the situation. I consistantly assume my opponent has a better hand and analyze their betting stragey accordingly. I think this is hindering me from calling out some bluffs and properly analyzing my opponents betting and playing strategies. Is this a good analyzing method to start from? Or should I start over? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Answer: Confidence comes from knowledge and experience. Since you are brand new to the game then it is perfectly fine to feel the way you do. As you play more and learn more, the game will make sense more. Eventually you'll expect to win and feel relieved when you do and feel surprised and bummed when you don't.

Some advice I can give you right now to have a little more confidence is make sure you understand what hands are strong and what aren't. Know what the "nuts" are, or close to it. Be able to look at the board and figure out if straights or flushes are possible and if it is likely your opponent has one of those.
