No Limit Holdem Reraising

Question:I understand the topic of "check raises". My question has to deal with reraises. I'm the first one to act and I make a bid of $100. The person to my left throws out $500. Can I only see him with a bet of $400, or can I reraise him whatever I want. Furthermore, can reraises keep going until one person goes all in? I appreciate your help.

Answer: The number of reraises is usually 3 -- a bet and then three raises. There are a couple exceptions to this; Indian Casinos sometimes allow heads up players to keep reraising back and forth as much as they like (they don't have a cap); Vegas sometimes has a bet and 4 raises instead of the 3.

So the answer to your question of whether or not you can raise your buddy after he made it $500, the answer is yes you can. Then he would have the option to reraise. You could call him or put in the last raise. The final raise is called a "cap." You'll hear people at poker tables say, "cap it" or "cappadocia", etc. Normally in No Limit holdem people don't reraise back and forth as much. Usually there is a bet, a raise and then if the first person reraises, it is a big enough reraise that it puts someone all-in. In Limit Holdem though, caps are pretty common (especially preflop).

Lastly, some people call reraising in No Limit Holdem, "coming over the top." The idea is you bet, someone raised and then you reraised them and went over them. You here Mike Sexton on the World Poker Tour always use that expression. He always follows up by saying he considers it the strongest move in No Limit Holdem Poker.

Question 2:You've mentioned before that 3 or 4 reraises are allowed during tournament play. My question is does that include the pre-flop? Say the first person bets $100, the second $200, the third $300, etc.... Does the 5th and 6th person only have the power to call or fold, or since they haven't bet, can they raise? If there are nine people to a table, could it happen that we have the initial bet and 8 reraises? I appreciate your help with this one.

Answer 2: Yes, this includes all betting rounds. So preflop there is a bet and 3 raises allowed. Then on the turn card there is one bet and 3 raises allowed, etc. This counts for everyone so in your example if the first person bet and the second made it $200, the third made it $400, the next person could raise once more. Then the other players could only fold or call. Then on the next betting round it resets so they can raise and reraise again.
