No Limit 99 Against A Maniac
Top 3 Beginner Rooms
Flop brings QQ7 rainbow. Three checks. Turn brings 2 still no flush. Maniac goes all-in (!) I was going to throw my cards away until I saw it was only $13 pot was only $5 before. Second player folds, I decide to call. Thinking if he has an overpair I'm screwed, he raised pre-flop so he's got some cards there, I was worried about AQ as that would have been pretty much unbeatable. The only reason I went in was because the raise was so much higher than the pot, it just looked like he was buying it. Last card was turned leaving QQ724 rainbow, he has AK off-suit - my pair of 9s cleans him out! Once the blinds came round I got out of the room because I didn't like the way I played it.
Any thoughts?
Answer: There is nothing wrong with the way you played the hand. That's a pretty good flop against someone who you consider a maniac. The options are that he has you horribly beat or you have him. Since he is a maniac you guess that he has less of a hand instead of more. It turns out he had a good starting hand but he played it wrong. I'm not sure what makes you think you didn't play the hand well. You had the best hand and got the other person to put all their chips in.
When you play against a very aggressive player you'll be put in spots where you have to use your gut feeling and make reads to win with marginal hands. To play expert poker, you adapt to each hand and opponent to make the best decisions. You did that here and won. You should give yourself a pat on the back. The only other advice I can give is that you could have bet a little on the flop but the end result would have been the same, he would have gone all-in. Playing it either way was the same.
