Moving Up To 10/20

Question: I am a fairly successful 3-6 and 4-8 limit holdem player, playing in local cardrooms for many years. I am considering moving up to test the waters at 10-20.

What sort of bankroll do you recommend? Also, how much would you bring to sit down at the table (minimum buyin is 100 at this table, but 10 small bets is clearly not enough to have at the table).

Thanks.

Answer: That's a good question. In my 10/20 days I felt comfortable with a $3000 bankroll but the games weren't too crazy and they weren't kill pots. I would usually just buy-in for a rack of red (red was $5 chips so it would be $500). I would usually bring $1k with me when I played that limit. That's the same as 3 racks would be at 3/6. It was my feeling that if I lost that much, putting more in that day wouldn't be a good idea since I would be beat down emotionally and the likelihood of me bringing it back would be slim.

Congratulations on moving up. That move is a good one and it is when you start seeing the money that can be made in poker. That is also when you start to see the first conceptual shift in cards as more people know how to play well. You'll encounter some tighter players as well as lots more aggression. Just expect them to try to push you around a bit more than at the lower limits so don't be afraid to play back at them. Up till this point what has made you a winner is knowing when to fold. From 10/20 on up that won't be enough, you'll need to also know when to bet. Betting will become your greatest weapon.
