Missing Flops
I really enjoy your site (I've read ALL the pages). I've been "serious" about poker for about 5 months now. I grew up around poker (my grandfather would have the boys over every Saturday night). I've been playing $25/$50 No Limit Hold'em online. I'm not sure if I'm a good player or not, but I've built my play-money bankroll from $1000 to over $66,000 in the course of a few weeks.

How concerned should I be about what I would call "misses." For example, I was playing this morning and had A,10 offsuit. I was in middle position and a player before me came in for a big raise and so I folded. I didn't think A,10 off was strong enough to call. Several other players called behing me and the flop came up A-A-10. Ouch! I would have flopped the nuts.
This happens to me somewhat often. Am I making errors in judgment here, or is that just the nature of poker? Another example is I folded J,4 off in early position only to have the flop come up J-J-4. I could have limped in and maybe won a big pot. Does this matter?
You have a great site and I hope you continue to add to it.
Thank you,

Answer: Thanks for the question Thomas! When you play cards, you are going to fold a lot of winners. Your J4 is a perfect example. The only way to hit every flop would be to play every hand and you can't win in the long run doing that so you have to play hands that have an edge and fold ones that suck (like J4). You aren't making an error, this is the nature of the beast. You shouldn't let this bother you because it will happen quite often.
On the same topic though, you should be conscious of what is winning in the game, not so much what the luck of the cards is but what hands people are winning with. This is an important measure of how you will play in the game. If you see a few players who are playing terrible cards all the way, then when you play against them you can loosen up some.
