Minimum Raise From Small Blind

Question:In a no limit game, you are sitting in the small blind and the blinds are $2/$4. When it comes to you, you decide to raise. Since you already have $2 in the pot, I understand that you must bet at least an additional $2 to equal the initial big blind of $4. But, when you raise, must the raise also be a minimum of $4 for a total of $8 or is it ok to raise it $2 to a total of $6.

I know that anyone else at the table that wanted to raise would have to raise the minimum of the big blind, but are there exceptions for the small blind?

Thanks

Answer: Thanks for the question. You are on the right track. In no limit holdem you need to always double the initial bet if you want to raise. The big blind is a forced bet -- the initial bet. That sets the minimum for the game and the first betting round. So to raise in no limit when the initial bet is $4, you would need to raise to $8 total. The $2 you already have in counts towards this so you'll only have to put in an additional $6.
