Minimum And Maximum Raises In No Limit Holdem

Question: I play in a weekly No-Limit Tournament Game and this issue keeps coming up. Pre-Flop if blinds are 10/20 the minimum call is 20 but what is the minimum raise? We have been playing the minimum is equal to the big blind and anything over (unless all in)

After-flop the minimum bet is the big blind but what is the betting rule to increase...again we have been playing if you are betting more than the big blind it has to be equal to the big blind.  Others are saying if the big is 20 you can bet 25 vs 40, which is right?

Thanks

Answer: Preflop, the minimum raise is doubling the big blind. So if this game has 10/20 blinds, preflop you must raise to $40 total. The maximum raise allowed preflop is all your chips.

Postflop (on the flop and after), the minimum raise is either the big blind, or the last bet or raise amount (if that is over the big blind amount). If I come out betting $100 into you on the flop, the minimum raise you can make is to $200. You couldn't raise me to $150 total, it has to be $200 or more. This is how it is played in most places. (Other countries can have different minimum raise amounts that equals all the previous bets.) Notice how quickly the betting escalates in no limit holdem, which is why there are rarely more than a raise and reraise. After the reraise it is usually all-in. The maximum raise is all your chips.
