Matching an All-in

Question:

When two people are heads up and one is the blind...this is the scenario. I have $225 in chips and no one else calls the all-in. However, the big blind at $300 wants to continue play. What will the big blind have to put in in order to play? Does he keep $300 in or pull back $75???

Answer:

Hi Jennifer

As I understand it, you move all-in with $225 and everybody folds to the big blind who has $300 and wants to call your bet. He or she can then simply call your $225.

If there are players left to act between the big blind and yourself, players who have placed bets before you raised all-in, they can now stay in the hand by also matching the $225. If the big blind wants to drive them out of the pot, an all-in raise with the remaining $300 may be a better move.

If there are no more players to act, just you and the big blind, it makes no difference if the big blind moves in the $300 or just calls your $225. The surplus amount will be given back anyway, since you can only win as much of him or her as you put in the pot, that is, $225.
