Lucky Player Winning Everytime

Question: i play with my friends quite often and one person usuially wins. Althought he does bluff some pots and gets people to fold he is probably the luckiest person i know. When he's in a hand in someone and he happens to ride it all the way to the river calling any bet, he manages to get a gunshot straight or a pair. Whenever anyone is in a pot with him and we turn over a pair each, i'll have a king kicker and he'll have an ace. That sort of situation happens a lot. In another instance its a 3 handed game, i go all in with QhJh. He calls and flips a 8h7h. The flop is a Q Q 6. The turn comes and its a 9. On the river comes a 10, giving him a straight to win the hand. the situation was extremely luck because the other player folded a 9 10 off suit. It seems that every time we play someone ends up in a similar situation and he comes out on top. I realize that luckyness is not everything in the game, in fact its a small part, but when he gets either a pocket pair or suited picture cards almost every hand, what can i do about it. please help, thanks

Answer: Let me give you two angles on this:

1. Science angle. Most likely you guys haven't played enough hands to see the numbers start to represent the probability. So in the short term he looks like he is lucky (and he is) but in the long term it will catch up with him and the numbers will correct themselves. There is a lot of variation in the short term. Sometimes looking at the problem through an analogy can help you keep from ripping your hair out.

For example, would you be mad at the guy if he had a die and everytime time he rolled a 1 or 2 he won and you have him a buck but if he rolled anything else he gave you a buck? Poker is fundamentally that.

2. Personal angle. You're going to have people who for some reason just beat you over and over. It happens at all levels of poker. There will be one guy at the table that is playing like an idiot and constantly takes a worse hand against you and comes out on top. Then to make matters worse he'll lose every other pot to every other player besides you. My advice is just keep on keeping on!

Seriously though, stick to your guns and what you know is good play and you will do well in the end. That doesn't give you much solstice now but just wait. Before you know it he will get a healthy does of reality smacking him in the face.
