Lively Opponents

Question: I don't mean to sound like a square but I find the home game I play in has some disturbing features . The decibel level can get quite high usually composed of cackling and loud laughter . Here's what really drives me crazy talk like "I'm gonna take you down", "I'm gonna kick your ass this hand" and other silly phrases. I like the casinos better because for the most part nobody knows each other so there is little conversation and noise . I realize in a home game guys want to "blow off steam" . I this guess causes the testosterone to run wild . Any opinions ? Thanks !!!

Answer: LOL I don't know. Both sound fun. If you are looking for a serious game then maybe that isn't it but if you want to just have some fun, have a few drinks and bad beat your buddies it might add to the game. I try to separate my play at home games with friends from my serious play (which is especially needed when everyone always wants to try to get a piece of you).

Over the past two years as poker has gotten more popular and my non-poker friends have picked up a little holdem, I hear nothing but, "hey man, let's play holdem..I want to play you heads up!" I hear that from my friends, my girlfriend's friends and even their friends. And to be honest, playing poker with them isn't fun for me. If I am at a party the last thing I want to do is sit down and try to prove myself.

I would much rather play a drinking game like Asshole, Kings Cup or Smoke and Fire. I can sum my feelings in an analogy. When in conversation it comes up that my Mom is a professional artist, I often here people say, "oh yeah, my Aunt paints too."

I will say though that when I do play with my poker friends in home games, we have a good time. Laying down an absolutely horrible bad beat on your buddy is better than even winning a huge pot in real life -- especially when you can call him your bitch for the rest of the night.

Right when I was about to move on to the next question I remembered a story that fits into this topic well. Poker players are characters, both good and bad. You'll find lively players at cardrooms as well and one night, years ago, me and my buddy ended up playing at a table with a dwarf, a person who looked like they had a fake nose, a guy who reminded me of a walrus because he was missing all his front teeth, and a cute Asian dealer.

What was hilarious is that we, my buddy and the dwarf, were all having a great time laughing and this Asian dealer and the fake nose guy were totally pissed off. Everytime the dwarf won a pot his arms were so short that he had to climb on the table to pull the pot (he was on an end seat). During the few hours there in the wee hours of the morning this dwarf was mocking the Asian dealer relentlessly (and she deserved it).

On one hand she raised and I called saying, "I'm calling just to bad beat you." She was playing super tight so I was just giving her a little action. I called her with a weak King when I knew she had AK and ended up catching a second pair on the river to win while the whole time telling her I was going to get lucky. Then she said, "ugly cards for an ugly player." The dwarf, my buddy, and I just started busting up laughing.

Then the very next hand there was a lot of action and the dwarf ended up winning. Before the hand was over I requested to see the cards of all the players because I was curious what these guys had to bet and cap the turn with. The guy with the fake looking nose showed his hand, already really pissed off, and I said, "oh, I had you beat at least!" Then he took his cards and threw them at me. Again, us three started busting up laughing. So if you want to see some lively weirdoes go to a cardroom on a Tuesday and stay there all night.
