Live Hand Touching Community Cards

Question: I was recently in a tournament and I went all-in after the flop. I received one caller. It was the first hand of the tournament so we were both all-in.

I was the dealer and when I flipped my two cards over, one of them hit one of the community cards (both my cards were face up). Does this constitute a dead hand and therefore my oponnent automatically wins the pot? Some were insisting that I automatically lost, others said it only applies if my cards were face down.

Answer: Your hand is still fine. I think they may be confusing rules. There is a rule that states if a hand touches the muck pile it can't be removed and it is dead, but live hands touch the flop cards all the time, since people have to sit so closely in the middle seats. To avoid any trouble in a cardroom or at home, make sure you always place a chip, finger or small item on your hole cards to prevent the dealer from accidentally mucking them. ("Protect your hand at all times.")

Just about everyday I play I see someone who forgets to protect their hand and they turn around to eat or something and the dealer kills it. It isn't the dealer's fault. A good dealer is trying to move through hands as quickly as possible and the player's responsibility is to act in turn and protect their hand.
