Hand Analysis
I really enjoy your site. I've been playing on-line for a short while, playing $2/4 trying to develop a tight, aggressive style based on a lot of the writings on your site, as well as some of the references you've provided. I had a series of hands yesterday that I'd like to share with you, both for your advice as to how I played as well as just to vent a little bit. Here are the hand histories of three hands that I saw within a half hour of each other. I'm otilt, in Seat 8.
Top 3 Beginner Rooms
Finally, in the third hand, not a half hour later, I lose a highly disguised full house to a better full house pulled on the river.
My first thought is that I wasn't aggressive enough with my betting on both of the hands that I lost, but I really have the feeling that no matter how I had bet either hand, the other guy wouldn't have folded, so that I could have lost even more $$ than I did. I know you don't have the advantage of having seen how each player was playing, or how tight/loose the game was, so it's hard for you. But if you would offer some thoughts on how I played each hand and whether I got crushed by bad luck or horrible play, I'm sure it would help my game.
Thanks again for a great site.
Cheers,
Kevin

Answer: Wow those are some serious bad beats, plus two straight flushes back to back? Straight flushes are extremely rare. I don't think I've ever seen two in a row, or even in the same session. That seems a little odd to me. Where was this?
The first hand you played fine. I might have raised the turn and if I got reraised I would just call. On the river though I would for sure cap it (max raises). The only hand that can beat you at that point would be quad Tens or a straight flush and the chance of that is next to nothing. After seeing how badly the people played the AA one you mentioned, you should definitely cap the full house. He could even have just a Ten.
On the last hand when you had 88, you played that one perfectly. The guy with the Aces just got really lucky and played like an idiot. He couldn't have possibly thought his two pair was good there -- at minimum you had a 4.
Poker can be really one sided sometimes and no matter how well you play and how badly someone else plays, you lose to them. The main thing to keep in mind is that it won't always be like that and what little they win from you that day will be lost right back to the poker community tomorrow.
