Everyone All-in, Who Gets Second Place

Question: We had an odd occurrence in our weekly (friends) holdem tourney.

Player 1 was on the short stack, player 2 had a decent amount of chips, and player 3 had the bulk of the chips.

All 3 players went all in. Player 3 had the best hand and won the game. The question was, who took second place? We went by the final hand ranking, but someone said it would be whoever had the second largest chip count before the last hand. Could you tell me how this would work out? Thanks

Answer: The way I have seen it done in the past is what you mentioned -- the person with the second largest stack before going all-in gets second place. I'm not sure how fair that really is considering the other player may have had a better hand but that's the way it is usually done. What I would like to see is a big event like the WSOP or WPT with the above example and the difference between Player 1 and Player 2's chip count only be a chip. That one chip would cost the loser hundreds of thousands of dollars. hehehe
