Evaluating Flushes In Holdem

Question:Only two players(P1 & P2) left in hand.

P1 hole cards: 7of spades & 2 of clubs.

P2 hole cards: 4 of spades & 5 of spades.

Community cards: A of spades, K of spades, 9 of spades, 2 of spades, & 10 of hearts.

Who wins?

We had a big argument. I said P1 wins he has higher flush. Others said they both had ace high flush split pot.

Thanks for your input.

Answer: The rule for evaluating holdem hands is: The best five cards win. Notice the keyword is five. We look at the seven possible cards and make the best five card hand. For most hands, this rule is pretty clear. For some reason though, flushes are a little different. In the example above, both players have an Ace high flush, but the person with the 7 of spades wins, because they have the better five cards than their opponent.
