Drawing When Board Is Paired
Top 3 Beginner Rooms
The flop came out Jd Kd Kc. Two players checked and the third bet 800. Everybody folded except me. I felt like gambling, called, and spiked the 10 of spades on the turn giving me the straight. Buddy bet 1600 and I raised to 4K. He thought about it for ages and called.
The river brought out a 9 and he checked. I bet 1600 and he went all in. I called and found that he had hit a full house, Kings over nines. I was eliminated.
My feeling about the hand was that after the turn I should have gone all in, as he probably wouldnt have just called pre flop with K J, and he may have with K 10, but it would have been an OK risk to take. But knowing that he had a K in his hand, was I foolish to give him another card that maybe would make his full house? He probably would have call an all in on the turn with K9 and the result would have been the same anyway, so was I just unlucky?
Was the real problem letting him in the hand in the first place by not raising pre flop? Or was I wrong to call his 800 bet after the flop and draw to a hand against a tall stack, that if I hit, could easily be dominated by a boat?
Your thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks
Answer:
When someone has trips, the chance of pushing them off the hand is next to nothing. So even if you did push all-in on the turn, the result would have been the same.
One thing you have to be very cautious about doing is drawing when you may be drawing dead, or be easily redrawn against. Flops that are paired, like the one above, or all of one suite are typically not ones that you want to draw against. In your example, drawing to that 10 seems innocuous enough. The problem is that even if you hit it, if the person has trips, he still has 10 outs to beat you, or you could already be drawing dead. In a limit holdem game, you can be a little less cautious because an error isn't catastrophic. In a no limit game, tighter play is better. As a final note, you also don't like drawing to gutshot draws as much when there is a flush draw on the board, because even if you hit, the guy could have a strong redraw.
